What Are Cataracts?
Cataracts are not a disease or a growth, but a progressive condition that causes the eye’s natural lens to become cloudy.
The lens inside the eye that you’re born with is made up primarily of water and proteins. With age, the proteins will begin to clump up and cloud a part of the lens. That process starts to form a cataract. Cataracts may be white or take on color such as yellow or brown. As cataracts become more opaque and dense, the retina receives less and less light. The light that does reach the retina becomes increasingly blurred. This causes gradual impairment of vision. If left untreated, cataracts can cause unnecessary blindness. Though, this blindness can be corrected with cataract surgery.
How Do I Know I Have A Cataract?
Common cataract symptoms include increasingly blurred vision, halos around light, glare, difficulty seeing at night, double vision, and reduced color perception. Almost everyone has at least some form of clouding in the lens of the eye over the age of 70, but diabetes, heart disease, or history of eye trauma or eye surgery may speed up the clouding process of the lens. To be certain, however, it is recommended you have a complete eye examination by an ophthalmologist or optometrist.
Cataracts do not cause pain or discomfort. Also, cataracts do not cause intermittent vision blurring. If you are experiencing these symptoms, please have an appointment scheduled with an ophthalmologist or optometrist.
